Q.Can you tell me anything about a plantaris rupture?

S.W.

A.The plantaris muscle and tendon lie in the lower leg adjacent to the Achilles tendon. These organs don’t have any apparent function in the body, but have remained through the evolutionary process.

About 10 percent of people are born without a plantaris tendon and have no noticeable problem from this. The plantaris muscle and tendon are sometimes used to help repair an Achilles tendon rupture.

A plantaris rupture can cause discomfort in the lower leg, but this injury does not require surgery. With rest and time, plantaris injuries typically resolve and there is no significant change in function.
