A group of pharmaceuticals that are used to treat epileptic seizures are antiepileptic drugs, or anticonvulsants (AED). As they act as mood stabilizers, there has been an increase in their use for the treatment of bipolar disorder.
The anticonvulsants Gabapentin and Pregabalin have both been found effective prescription medications in treating chronic pain caused by migraines and neuropathy. These drugs included act in different ways, but are all effective at treating insomnia, anxiety, and depression.
Gabapentin can help with flu-like symptoms, exhaustion, cognitive disorders, IBS, neurological dysfunction, bowel and bladder problems, restless leg syndrome, muscle tightness, and multiple chemical sensitivity. It is one of the most important treatments for CFS/ME due to its ability to treat many symptoms at the same time.
The side effects experienced by anticonvulsants vary between them and can be different for each individual taking them. Severe reactions or liver problems are very rarely caused by the older ones. Sedation is more often caused by the newer medications.
Side effects that are common are impairment of vision, dizziness, and headaches. Some anticonvulsants, such as vigabatrin, topiramate, and zonisamide, can cause weight loss, but some can also cause weight gain.
A medication that is very popular for fibromyalgia and CFS/ME is Neurontin, or Gabapentin. It can lessen a lot of problems like hot flashes, as well as interstitial cystitis. It is employed often for mood and anxiety conditions. It is highly popular as a treatment for pain, mostly for burning or electric shock-like neuropathy.
