Q.I am a 46-year-old woman in great health but a few pounds overweight. I try to walk at least a mile a day. In the middle of the night I wake up with such horrendous leg cramps that I cry. They come and go all night. Is there something I can take to help stop these cramps? What precautions can I take to prevent this from happening? I’d hate to have to quit walking.

A. Leg cramps are a real pain, aren’t they — especially those horrendous Charlie horse ones that grab you right in the calf, making you jump out of bed and prance around like you’re on fire. I get them, too, so I really feel for you.

There are a lot of theories about their cause: metabolic and electrolyte disturbance, muscle soreness, circulatory insufficiencies. Generally, you have to work with your doctor to get to the root cause of them. But here are some tips that may provide relief.

– Try increasing your intake of minerals, especially potassium, magnesium and calcium.
– Eat two bananas or a baked potato right before bedtime.
– Wear loose-fitting warm socks to bed.

– Learn to wake up right as the muscle is cramping and stop the cramp from forming by short-circuiting it. Do this by straightening your leg and flexing your ankle, pointing your toes up toward your head.- — Some people benefit from working with a biofeedback specialist; ask your doctor for a referral. — Get checked for circulatory problems in the legs.

Have your pulses evaluated, and talk to your physician about intermittent claudication.
– Don’t quit walking altogether, but see what happens if you switch to cycling for a week.
– Get new walking shoes with lots of comfort and cushioning.

Summer is here, the kids are out of school, and vacation is just around the corner. Demanding schedules can wreak havoc with plans for eating nutritionally, especially during the summer months when outdoor activities increase. Like many Americans, you may resort to snacking as a substitute for regular meals. If so, you’re not alone—each year, Americans consume approximately 23 pounds of snack food per person ($13.4 billion annually).

Contrary to popular belief, snacking is not all bad. In fact, snacks are a terrific way to add balance to your diet and keep you from feeling deprived between meals. Snacking can, however, add many unwanted calories to your diet with little nutritional contribution. The challenge is to learn how to choose healthy snacks that fit your lifestyle. This article discusses the challenges of snacking and offers ideas to help make your summer snacking healthful and enjoyable.

Snacking Traps

Doctor and colleagues at Columbia University found that Americans eat at least one snack a day, and most often two or three. Most people choose snack foods for taste and convenience and not nutrition. Traditional snacks include candy, cookies, and chips that are high in fat, calories, and sugar and low in nutrition.

All of us realize that attempting to lose weight is one of the most universal problems that people have. If you inquire, nearly every dieter will agree that continuous hunger pangs are the problem with their everyday battle to stay on their weight loss diets. However fortunately, there are methods to control hunger pangs and reduce weight besides basic willpower and discipline. Foods that contain plenty of protein and fiber have been verified in research to suppress your appetite, assisting with managing hunger cravings so you can reduce your weight quickly and do well.

When you are dieting, you especially require natural appetite suppressants to control your appetite. However, keep in mind that although these foods are appetite suppressants, your weight loss menu shouldn’t be restricted to these foods only. The reason for this is that natural appetite suppressants, even though they have a lot of fiber and or protein and have reduced calories as well, don’t offer all necessary vitamins and minerals that you require for health. So, attempt to consume more foods that are appetite suppressants and assist with weight loss, but also eat foods that contain healthy fats and carbohydrates.

There are five foods that can be consumed for appetite suppressing and weight loss assistance:

Pine Nuts

The seed that has the most protein is pine nuts. When we consume protein laden foods for reducing weight, they tell our hormones to let our brains know that we are satisfied. Eating a healthy portion of pine nuts during the day will assist with appetite suppression when attempting to lose weight. Additionally, pine nuts have pinolenic acid, which is a polyunsaturated oil that tells the hormones that you are satisfied.

Oatmeal

Your ability to achieve the goals of appetite reduction and weight loss can be helped by eating oatmeal. Eating some oatmeal, which is high in fiber content, is a good idea while you are working through a weight loss plan. Foods that have a lot of fiber, such as oatmeal, support a full feeling quicker and you stay full for a longer time than is the case with other foods. Also, the appetite is suppressed with oatmeal and this helps you reduce your weight, since the glycemic index is lower. Foods with a reduced glycemic index enter the blood stream gradually and this causes you to feel less hunger.

Bananas

Bananas are wonderful fruits that assist with weight reduction because they suppress your appetite. Bananas are a very good food with appetite suppressing fiber and necessary vitamins as well as minerals that support weight loss and maintain health. So attempt to include bananas in your weight loss goals and achieve your ideal weight easier.

Whey Protein

If you require strong appetite suppressants to assist with weight loss then don’t look any place else besides whey proteins. Whey proteins work better than other proteins. Additionally, proteins are powerful weapons that battle hunger pangs that stand in the way of your weight loss plans. When you are dieting for weight loss, try to mix protein shakes with whey protein along with soy or reduced fat milk. You will be surprised with your appetite suppressant and weight loss outcome.

Apples

Apples are very good sources that contain fiber to suppress your appetite, which is beneficial for your weight loss goals. Apples have limited fat and calories, which support weight loss when you are dieting. Additionally, apples are wonderful foods that suppress your appetite and support weight loss, since they have organic liquids that cause you to feel more satisfied, causing weight loss.

You don’t have to feel like you are starving to lose weight. You can receive assistance in curtailing your food cravings and reaching your weight loss goals by incorporating natural foods that have the appetite-suppressant qualities of high protein and fiber content. Keep in mind that fruits and vegetables are excellent choices for fiber but poultry, fish and lean meats have protein. Use these appetite suppressing supplements with your weight loss diet as well as water to have the ideal weight loss outcome.
