Nighttime Leg Cramps

Q.I am a 46-year-old woman in great health but a few pounds overweight. I try to walk at least a mile a day. In the middle of the night I wake up with such horrendous leg cramps that I cry. They come and go all night. Is there something I can take to help stop these cramps? What precautions can I take to prevent this from happening? I’d hate to have to quit walking.
